Eyelid Surgery Philosophy

Written by Dr. Jacobs

When it comes to cosmetic surgery around the eyes, also referred to as blepharoplasty, choosing a cosmetic surgeon with plenty of experience and sound judgment is essential. You want to see a refreshed look in the mirror after surgery, not someone who appears completely different.

Our patients are well aware that wrinkled, droopy, puffy skin around the eyes contributes to an aged appearance and they are eager for cosmetic surgery to change their looks for the better. At the same time, they often have concerns about the procedure. No one wants his or her results to look too tight, permanently surprised or cat-like, nor should the lower lid area look sunken and hollow.

The men and women we work with are glad to learn that Dr. Elliot Jacobs’ approach to eyelid surgery for New York patients is conservative and delicate. He relies on his extensive training as a plastic surgeon certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, and on more than thirty years of experience performing blepharoplasty. Eyelid surgery is a favorite of Dr. Jacobs, and he is known for beautiful, natural looking results that exceed his patients’ expectations.

Male and Female Differences

Dr. Jacobs takes into account subtle differences between female and male eyelids. Women look best with all redundant eyelid skin removed, creating a bright-eyed look and leaving a smooth surface for makeup to enhance the appearance.

Women’s lower eyelids should also be smooth as well. Bags, lines and small wrinkles should be banished completely.

On the other hand, men naturally have a small crease of extra skin on the upper lids. In fact, if they have ultra smooth and tight skin, they appear less masculine. Therefore, Dr. Jacobs deliberately leaves a very small amount of extra skin on the upper eyelids. Lower eyelids need not be completely wrinkle-free either—but bags should be removed. Again, Dr. Jacobs may leave a slight amount of extra skin in order to prevent an overly tight and unnaturally smooth appearance of the lower eyelids. For men, a residual small line or wrinkle is perfectly acceptable and perhaps distinguishing.

Related Procedures

It is not at all unusual for patients to combine eyelid surgery in New York with other procedures which Dr. Jacobs offers. Blepharoplasty can be performed on its own, and as such it can be one way to refresh the appearance at a modest cost and with a quick recovery. But there are other cosmetic surgeries that go hand-in-hand with eyelid surgery:

  • Browlift: Also called a forehead lift, a browlift is a natural complement for blepharoplasty for many patients. In fact, descending forehead skin often contributes to a hooded, tired look around the eyes to the extent where performing eyelid surgery without a browlift would not be advisable. During your consultation, Dr. Jacobs can show you how to evaluate your own situation and help you make the right decisions.
  • Facelift: Many of our patients undergo a facelift and blepharoplasty at once. Combining these procedures makes sense in terms of both cost and recovery time, and it can be so satisfying to rejuvenate your face from top to bottom.
  • Mid Facelift: For the right patient, Dr. Jacobs may recommend a procedure he’s perfected called a mid facelift. Performed through tiny incisions on the lower lids, this procedure elevates the skin of the mid face while it eliminates bags and wrinkles around the lower lids. Blepharoplasty for the upper lids at the same time can be an easy addition.
  • Mommy Makeover: While many moms look tired due to the demands of their schedule, some feel their appearance suffers from more than just the lack of rest. Some women who consult us about body and breast procedures elect eyelid surgery and perhaps a facelift to put the final touches on a mommy makeover.

Dr. Jacobs has performed thousands of eyelid surgeries for men and women and enjoys restoring a twinkle in the eyes! The best way to benefit from Dr. Jacobs’ experience is to arrange your own personal consultation with him.
