Necklift in New York

Written by Dr. Jacobs

Neck skin is delicate and not as resilient as skin in many other areas of the body. Therefore, some people notice the first signs of aging around their jawline and neck. Many men and women who have lost a substantial amount of weight also see their neck skin fail to bounce back into a more youthful position. That's why, for some patients we see in the consultation room in New York, a neck lift is high on the list of our recommendations for rejuvenation.

Once the skin on your neck area loses a good measure of elasticity, a variety of unwanted features can start to show. You may be seeing your once well-defined jawline start to look soft and jowly. Your sagging skin may look like a turkey wattle or you may sprout a double chin. Your neck muscles may even start to look ropy or banded. In the hands of an experienced plastic surgeon, a neck lift can address all these issues in a relatively straightforward procedure that involves an easy recovery.

Dr. Elliot Jacobs, a board certified plastic surgeon, has been performing plastic surgery in Manhattan for many years. He works with men and women in almost equal numbers, knowing how important it is to his patients to look as young as they feel. A neck lift in New York with Dr. Jacobs is one way to turn back the clock. Arrange a consultation with him to find out more.

Our Neck Lift Philosophy

Neck lift surgery can be performed as a single procedure, but it's often combined with other forms of cosmetic surgery. If you're ready for a complete facial makeover, you might choose to have a neck lift, facelift, eyelid lift and brow lift at once. If your mid face area still looks youthful, you might choose to combine a neck lift with an eyelid lift or even BOTOX® Cosmetic to brighten your upper face.

Since there are many options today for facial rejuvenation – both non-invasive and surgical – our goal is to educate our patients and help them make optimal choices. We appreciate each individual's resources and needs, including lifestyle, career and budget. Dr. Jacobs is adept at partnering with his patients and working together to create the right strategy.

Neck Lift Overview

Your neck lift with Dr. Jacobs starts with a small incision just underneath the chin where the scar will be light and inconspicuous. You may have additional incisions just behind your ears, inside creases that will hide eventual scars.

Through these small incisions, Dr. Jacobs can perform light liposuction if you have a fat pad under your chin to banish. If needed he can perform what's called a platysmaplasty to tighten or eliminate ropy bands of muscle. He will lift your skin, remove the excess and suture all tissues in place.

Neck lift surgery takes two or three hours in our accredited surgical suite. We usually recommend twilight anesthesia for our patients to avoid the effects of general anesthesia. You will be fully and comfortably asleep, monitored at all times by our experienced surgical staff including an M.D. anesthesiologist. After surgery, you will awaken gently and easily.

Most people report a fairly easy recovery from neck lift surgery. You can expect some swelling and bruising for a few to several days. Keeping your head as elevated and still as possible will help, as will cold compresses. Dr. Jacobs will prescribe pain medication should you want to take it for a few days. Most men and women feel and look ready to return to work in two weeks or less. Strenuous activity will need to wait a bit longer.

Neck Lift FAQ

  • I am not fat; how did my neck get so fat?

Believe it or not, nearly everyone has a decent amount of fat around their neck. The issue is that neck skin is delicate, and over time gives up its elasticity. This causes neck fat to become more prominent and often results in the dreaded double chin. Neck lift surgery can make all the difference.

  • Why does my neck have those ropy bands?

When we're young, the neck muscle, the platysma, is smooth. As we age that can change – the platysma can sag and even separate. Neck lift surgery can reattach parts of the muscle and/or cut parts of the muscle as required. Other options include BOTOX injections, but the results are not as dramatic and don't last a long time.

  • Can I combine a neck lift with surgery on another part of my body?

Whether we can create a combination like this depends on how much time you would need to be anesthetized and whether the recovery process would be reasonable. Come in for a consultation and let's discuss what your goals are.
